Afghani Chicken in Air Fryer: Easy 15-Minute Marinade Recipe
Share
Afghani chicken is the creamy, mildly spiced cousin of tandoori chicken: buttery, aromatic and soft on the heat. Restaurants cook it in a clay oven, but an air fryer gets you remarkably close at home, with juicy insides and lightly charred edges, in under 40 minutes from start to plate.
The usual recipe calls for cashew paste, cream, cheese, white pepper, cardamom and a long marination. This version keeps the flavour and skips the shopping list by using Afghani Silk, our ready-to-use Afghani chicken marinade.
What you need (serves 2)
- 250–300 g boneless chicken (thigh stays juiciest; breast works too)
- 1 pack Afghani Silk marinade
- 40 ml water
- 1–2 tbsp butter or ghee (melted)
- Optional to serve: onion rings, lemon wedges, mint chutney, warm naan
How to make Afghani chicken in an air fryer
1. Cut
Cut the chicken into even, bite-sized pieces, about 1.5–2 inches. Even sizes cook evenly, which is the secret to juicy air-fryer chicken. Pat the pieces dry with a paper towel so the marinade clings.
2. Coat
In a bowl, mix the Afghani Silk blend with 40 ml water and the melted butter or ghee into a smooth paste. Add the chicken and toss until every piece is evenly coated. Leave it to marinate for 15 minutes. If you have time, longer in the fridge only deepens the flavour.
3. Cook
Preheat the air fryer to around 200°C for 3–4 minutes. Lightly grease the basket and arrange the pieces in a single layer with a little space between them. Crowding steams the chicken instead of charring it, so cook in batches if needed.
Air fry for roughly 14–18 minutes, turning the pieces halfway and brushing them with a little extra butter. Every air fryer runs differently, so check a thick piece: the chicken is done when it is no longer pink in the centre and the juices run clear (75°C inside if you use a thermometer).
4. Finish
For that restaurant-style char, give it a final 1–2 minutes at the highest setting. Rest for 2 minutes, then serve with onion rings, a squeeze of lemon and mint chutney.
Tips for the best Afghani chicken
- Use thigh pieces if you like it extra tender. They stay moist even if slightly overcooked.
- Don't skip the butter or ghee. It is what gives Afghani chicken its rich, silky finish.
- Single layer, always. Space in the basket means crispy edges.
- No air fryer? Cook it in a hot pan with a little ghee for 10–12 minutes, turning often, or bake at 220°C for about 20 minutes.
What to serve with Afghani chicken
It is great as a starter on its own, but also works rolled into wraps, tucked into a shawarma, or served over rice bowls with salad and a creamy dip.
FAQs
Is Afghani chicken spicy?
No. It is one of the mildest North Indian chicken dishes, creamy and aromatic rather than hot, which makes it a favourite with kids too.
How much chicken does one pack marinate?
One pack of Afghani Silk is made for 250–300 g of chicken or fish.
Can I make it with paneer?
Yes. Use the same method and cut the air-frying time to about 8–10 minutes, since paneer only needs to brown.
